Initial Observations about Windows 7…

January 12, 2009 in Uncategorized by Joe

I am currently installing Microsoft Windows 7, The replacement for the less than steller Vista. I am installing the beta version of the Ultimate version released this weekend on a spare P4 box with 2 Gigs of RAM.

Initial Observations:

1. Asks about activation at as soon as it gets installed :(

2. As soon as the desktop loads, it sees that there is no Anti-virus software and asks if you would like some links to sites to get some.  :)

3. IE8 initial load asks if you would like to load Suggested sites “…Discover sites you might like based on websites you visit. :|

4. Links to AVG, Kaspersky, and Norton. (currently) :|

5. Windows firewall look much more flexible and customizable.  :)

6. Clean install seems snappy.  Tentative :) Will see what happens with apps installed….

7. Nice fish background :)

8. No Classic Start menu :( :(

9. No Classic Control Panels :(

10. Default Control Pannel view has too few icons, all items has way to many… :(

11. Networking Center is over simplified and hard to use. :(

Time to go home. Will update more as I play…

Relationship Blogging – Rich Tatum
This afternoon, I attended an interesting session about Relationship Blogging by Rich Tatum of http://tatumweb.com/blog/. He had some good summary’s. He talked about Dave Winer, Scoble and a few other well know bloggers. (Glad to see the inside looking out and recognizing ideas that work. Lets face it, Thats often not the case in Ministry). Here is a few bullet points.

Blogs need to be about :

  • transparency
  • authenticy
  • conversation
  • connections
  • personal
  • intimate

Why are Blogs different different :

  • Personally Written, rarely vetted
  • often raw, emotional, and assertive
  • More Like letters than articles
  • Occasional and timely
  • Controversy friendly

He followed the relationship of a number of bloggers to show how relationships are built and dialogue occurs.

Internet Ministry Conference – Day 3 – Session 1

September 21, 2007 in Uncategorized, Web/Tech by Joe

After doing a little session shuffle, I wound up this morning in a session by Kent Shaffer from ChurchRelevance.com. The session was titled “Communication Without Words”. Kent convered many aspects of design and the power of the environment. He presented many examples of how the outside world uses design, and made connections to useage in the church and minstry arena.

It is a fantastic presentation. So often people forget that design and art are important. The medium is so powerful. Is say alot.

I need to stew on this one. Lots of Great information. Fantastic session.
